근거이론

근거 이론(Grounded theory)은 사회과학자들이 수행하는 질적 연구에 주로 적용되어 온 체계적인 방법론이다. 이 방법론은 데이터 분석과 귀납 추론을 통해 가설과 이론을 구축하는 과정을 포함한다.[1][2][3] 이 방법론은 전통적인 과학 연구에서 사용되는 가설 연역 모델과 대조를 이룬다.

근거 이론에 기반한 연구는 질문 하나로 시작하거나 심지어 단순히 질적 데이터를 수집하는 것으로 시작될 가능성이 높다. 연구자가 수집된 데이터를 검토함에 따라 아이디어나 개념이 연구자에게 분명해진다. 이러한 아이디어/개념은 데이터로부터 "출현(emerge)"한다고 한다. 연구자들은 해당 아이디어/개념을 간결하게 요약하는 코드로 태그를 붙인다. 더 많은 데이터가 수집되고 재검토됨에 따라 코드는 더 높은 수준의 개념으로 그룹화될 수 있고, 그 다음에는 범주(category)로 그룹화될 수 있다. 이러한 범주는 가설이나 새로운 이론의 기초가 된다. 따라서 근거 이론은 연구자가 기존의 이론적 틀을 선택하고, 그 틀에서 도출된 하나 이상의 가설을 개발한 다음, 가설의 타당성을 평가할 목적으로만 데이터를 수집하는 전통적인 과학적 연구 모델과는 상당히 다르다.[4]
